Going in too flat, or trying to push the plank straight down like a puzzle piece, jams the tongue against the groove instead of letting it glide into place, and that is the single most common reason a joint refuses to seat.
Once a tongue gets forced at the wrong angle, the thin locking lip along the edge can chip or crack, and a damaged lip will never click properly again no matter how many times you retry it. If a board suddenly stops locking after ten pieces went in fine, stop and inspect the edge under good light before assuming the whole plank is defective.
Subfloor Prep Nobody Talks About
Laminate floats over the subfloor rather than attaching to it, which means the subfloor itself needs to be flat within a tight tolerance, generally no more than 3/16 inch of variation over a 10 foot span. A dip or hump underneath puts uneven pressure on the joint as you walk the plank into position, and that pressure is often what keeps a piece from fully seating even when your angle and technique are correct.
Skipping self leveling compound on an older subfloor, or laying laminate directly over uneven original flooring without checking it with a straightedge, is one of the most overlooked causes of stubborn joints. A five minute check with a 4 foot level before you open a single box can save an entire afternoon of fighting with planks that seem to click but never quite lie flat.
Temperature And Acclimation Matter More Than You Think
Laminate core material expands and contracts with humidity and temperature, and manufacturers ask you to let unopened boxes sit in the installation room for 48 to 72 hours before you start for a real reason. Planks installed straight out of a hot garage or a cold delivery truck are often slightly warped at a microscopic level, just enough to throw off how the tongue and groove line up.
This matters even more in a region with dry summer heat and sharp day to night temperature swings, where boards that felt fine in the showroom can behave differently once they sit in your actual living room. If the install goes smoothly for the first hour and then joints start fighting you as the room warms up in the afternoon sun, acclimation time, not technique, is usually the missing step.
When A Damaged Edge Or Bad Batch Is The Real Culprit
Sometimes the problem really is the product and not the installer. A locking edge crushed in shipping, a warehouse forklift that clipped a pallet corner, or a manufacturing run with a slightly undersized tongue will not click no matter how patient you are.
The way to tell the difference is simple. Pull a fresh plank from a different box and try the same joint. If the new plank locks cleanly, the original board is damaged and should be set aside rather than forced. Trying to hammer a bad piece into place with a tapping block usually just cracks the planks around it too.
